Adoption Process

Are you and your family ready to make the big and exciting decision to adopt a dog?  We are extra thrilled that you have chosen Mama Zoey & Puppies Rescue (MZPR) to find the right dog for your family! 

Now that you have made this important decision, you might be wondering how to get the ball rolling.  Don’t worry, MZPR has you covered, and our rescue crew is here to support you through the entire process.  Here are some recommendations from our family to yours in finding that perfect match.

1. Create your ideal dog profile.  Bringing a dog into the family is a huge commitment. MZPR takes pride in ensuring that our dogs find the right family AND that you find a dog that is the right fit for your family.  Discuss with your family what the ideal dog means to you.  Do you want a couch potato dog, or do you want an active dog to join you on your morning runs?  Are you interested in training a puppy and the idea of watching a dog through all stages of life or are you interested in pampering an older dog who has witnessed hardship?  Your family might need a very gentle and sweet dog that can be patient with young children vs. a rough tumbler that occasionally forgets they are 60 pounds of muscle.  Every dog is unique with its own personalities and quirks, so establishing what your family wants and needs will help you find a rescue dog that is as close to your “perfect” dog as possible.

2. Browse our adoptable dogs.  Now that you have an idea of what you are looking for, check out our adoptable dogs!  We’ve got them in all shapes, sizes and colors.  If a dog catches your eye, take a deeper look into its profile to learn the age, breed, approximate size, etc.  Do not fret if more than one dog strikes your fancy.  MZPR will make sure you have the opportunity to meet any and all dogs in which you are interested. 

3. Attend a MZPR adoption event.  Maybe you’re not too sure who you’d like to add to your family yet. That’s okay, we know its a difficult choice! We recommend attending an adoption event. We do our best to schedule at least one per month. Since we can’t always bring all of our available dogs with us to these events, we recommend contacting us in advance to make sure that the dogs you’re interested in can be there to meet you.

Once your application is received, you can expect a follow up from a MZPR crew member within 1-2 days.  From there, we will:

1. Schedule a home check.  We want to meet with you and all other family members that live in the foster home, including any current pets.  Not only is this our opportunity to meet with you and get a feel for the space in which the foster dog would live, but it is also a chance for you to ask all the questions you might have for us.  We can also have a discussion about your experience with dogs, as well as the personality and interests of you and your family. All of this information will help us determine the right dog for you to foster.  

2. Schedule a meet & greet with the foster dog.  If MZPR believes you would be the right family for your dog of choice, we will set a time for you to meet the dog. Depending on your unique situation, this can occur at your home or at a neutral location. If you currently have a dog, we plan for a neutral location such as a local park, dedicated doggie daycare, etc.  During this time, you have the opportunity to play with the dog and see how it interacts with your family. At the same time, we keep an eye out for its reactions to you and your family, including your own dog.  MZPR will be able to answer any additional questions you have and provide you with specific details on the mannerisms and personality traits of the foster dog that we have observed.

3. Give you an Adoption Contract. If both the home check and meet & greet work great, we will take the time to walk you through the Adoption Contract.  This contract will outline all of our expectations for you as the new family of a MZPR rescue dog, as well as what you can expect from MZPR following the adoption.  During this time, you will also pay any applicable adoption fees and receive copies of the dog’s veterinary records while in our care.

Adoption Fees

Adoption fees are used towards vaccinations, spay / neuter fees, microchips, and supporting their care while in a foster home. Vaccinations include deworming, DHPP and/or DHPPL, bordatella, and rabies (age dependent).
